I use barrel bits to not only reduce the length and reduce the thickness
from the new exposed free edge after shortening, but also use it shape round shaped nails.
Instead of hand filing in a round shaped nail free-edge, I use the drill to quickly
acheive rounded free-edges. Shaping the nails first with the drill not only saves
time, and wear and tear on my hands, but it also allows me to reduce free edge thickness
in a manner that is complimentary to the nail shape. If I contour the nail surface
first, then I end up having to go back and reduce some of the free edge thickness,
beacause as a square nail the thickness of the nail is hidden by the c-curve. Once
the corners are removed to go from square to round the nail will appear thick at that
spot. The balance and building of the nail is somewhat dependent on the shape to
dicatate it. Believe it or not, even though I have been using a drill for many years
it never occurred to me to use it for free edge shaping. I only
"discovered" this trick 2 years ago when I broke my arm and needed a way to
reduce hand filing as much as possible so as not to aggravate the condition while it
healed and I continued to work.
I use my diamond drill bits, the small barrel and barrel on the underside of the free edge of acrylic nails. I gently remove a bit of the free edge that may have become loosened, smoothing it out with the appropriate size barrel bit. The I perform what I call an "underfill", where I prime and apply a tiny ball of acrylic to the underside of the free edge. I then use my drill bit to smooth that out and finish my service, now that the free edge is clean, sealed, and smooth underneath.
I use a Large Diamond Barrel Bit to file away the free edge underneath my
"Glass Nails" after about three weeks. usually by then, the free edge
starts to grow out, thereby ruining the clear look. You also need to apply clear
polish to the underside of the nail to get rid of the scuffed appearance you'll see after
filing under the clear acrylic. Hope some of you can use this tip! Happy
filing!
